Quality Control Inspector

Main Objective:

The Quality Control Inspector is responsible for ensuring that deliverables are being built in compliance with Sheco and customer quality standards, ASME and TEMA specifications.

Key Responsibilities and Expected Results
  • Read and interpret fabrication/engineering drawings
  • Check Material Test Reports (MTRs) for compliance and file corresponding paperwork
  • Perform Non-Destructive Examinations
    • Visual inspection (Internal and external)
    • Dye Penetrant Examination (Internal and external)
    • Leak testing (air, soap, helium)
  • Perform physical measurements
    • Fit-up inspections (dimensions, tolerances, weld prep, material check)
    • 'After weld' inspections (dimensions, visual, etc.)
    • Hardness examinations
    • Thickness measurements
  • Perform 'Final Inspection' checks (Release for Shipment)
    • Dimensions
    • Orientations
    • Drawing compliance
    • Paint inspection
  • Read, interpret and implement information derived from ASME Sections II, V, VIII, IX, TEMA standards, SHECO Quality Assurance Manual and customer specifications.
  • Responsible for stamping all name plates.
  • Responsible for maintaining measuring devices.
  • Provide assistance (as needed) in guiding new employees toward a quality product as it relates to their area of responsibility.
  • Collect and organize data for documentation packages required for each order.
  • Maintain QC files (filing POs, MTRs, NDE reports, etc.)
  • Recommend improvements in quality procedures and equipment

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Education Required
High School Diploma or equivalent Experience
  • 2 years in quality with a similar metal fabrication industry
  • Computer experience with a good working knowledge of MS office products
  • Certified welding inspector or experience as a welder, fitter or machinist preferred
Knowledge & Skills
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks and interact with varied personalities in a fast-paced environment to assure delivery requirements.
  • Basic office skills
  • Ability to follow documented procedures and standards
  • General metal fabrication knowledge
  • Ability to work with and apply mathematical concepts.

Production Manager - 2nd Shift

Southern Heat Exchanger Corporation, a local metal fabricator and leader in the Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger Industry for 50 years, is currently looking to fill the following position for our second shift operation. Operations include welding, fitting and machining. Southern Heat Exchanger is a part of the NDA Group based in Hamilton, New Zealand and has plants in Tuscaloosa, Houston, New Zealand, and Australia.

Primary responsibilities will include:
  • Review job priorities and decide which employees are best qualified to meet customer requirements
  • Supervise personnel to ensure that work is being completed in a safe, accurate and timely manner
  • Communicate with appropriate departments regarding issues or concerns and work quickly to develop cost effective and timely solutions
  • Review and approve daily and weekly time cards
  • Maintain attendance records
  • Ensure effective employee relations
  • Train and coach production employees
  • Recommend improvements in fabrication methods, operating procedures and working conditions
  • Ensure a clean and safe work area
  • Ability to work overtime as required
  • Be an active participant in the SHECO quality assurance program

The successful candidate should have several years of fabrication and supervisory experience. ASME code fabrication and lean manufacturing experience is preferred. A demonstrated ability to lead and get results through others is also required. The candidate should be highly motivated and results oriented to contribute in a team environment and have the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects. This position will report to the General Manager and compensation will be commensurate with experience.

WELDING ENGINEER

Southern Heat Exchanger Corporation, a leader in the Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger Industry for 50 years, is currently looking for a qualified Welding Engineer. Southern Heat Exchanger is a part of the NDA Group based in Hamilton, New Zealand and has plants in Tuscaloosa, Houston, New Zealand, and Australia.

The selected candidate will join a growing organization as a member of the Production Team in Tuscaloosa. Primary responsibilities will include:

  • Establish, troubleshoot and improve welding procedures to guide production and welding
  • Test, evaluate and implement new fitting and grinding standards, welding materials and welding processes to lower costs and/or improve quality
  • Research, develop and implement new welding and associated fabrication equipment (whether it be manual or automated where possible) to lower costs and improve quality
  • Direct and coordinate technical personnel in performing inspection to ensure welders compliance with established welding procedures, restrictions and standards; in testing welds for conformance with national code requirements; or testing welding personnel for certification
  • Ensure safe operating conditions exist for welding personnel with new or existing equipment.
  • Help establish proper preventative maintenance programs for new and existing welding and associated fabrication equipment

The ideal candidate should have a Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering Technology or a Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering combined with hands on welding experience. In either case a minimum of five years experience in an ASME code welding manufacturing environment or a similar medium to heavy fabrication industry environment is required. Certification as a welding inspector (CWI) is also preferred but not required. The candidate should be highly motivated and results oriented to contribute in a team environment with a focus on continuous improvement. A creative problem solver with excellent interpersonal and computer skills is also required. This position will report to the General Manager and compensation will be commensurate with experience.
